Contacting us

Contact: Lionel Phillips

(see foot of page for details)

Please telephone at any reasonable time seven days a week, as someone will nearly always be able to speak to you.  But if not please leave a message, which will be answered as soon as possible.

We regret we are unable to accept orders by the use of credit cards.  There remain two or three ways in which we can serve you, depending on the nature of your request.

 1. REPAIRS

 (see below for payment methods)

a) You can call in with an instrument (please telephone first) and will receive an instant estimate of the cost of the work. If it is a specific fault, e.g. missing pad, it is usually done immediately, while you wait

b) You can send us the instrument through the post, (best to have a brief chat on the telephone first). In this case, please see that the instrument is carefully packed. You should assume that it will be subjected to pressure from another pile of parcels, so surround it with padding. If none is available, surround it with balls of screwed-up newspaper   -  a fairly useful way of insulating it. It should be adequately insured. The post office include £500 insurance if you pay for next day delivery -  but please check with them.  Upon receipt we will confirm its arrival (by telephone if you wish, and then confirmation in writing) plus an estimate of the cost of the work.

If accepted, the work will be carried out as soon as possible,  you will be invoiced for the cost,  and the instrument will be returned upon payment. All work is guaranteed for a minimum period of three months, and usually rather longer.   As a rule, all repairs are guaranteed one year.

POSTAGE, PACKING AND INSURANCE IN TRANSIT

These, particularly insurance,  can involve quite large sums. We therefore ask the following contribution to be sent with the payment for the job:

Clarinets, flutes, oboes:  all, a contribution of £5

Saxophones, bassoons, large instruments   -   £20 (These go by carter, not the post office parcel post)

PURCHASES

If you wish to purchase an instrument without calling here you can do so by e-mail order, following the system outlined below for payment.  The instrument will be insured whilst it is in transit.

PAYMENT

PAYMENT: if you are present you can pay by cash, or a cheque if the sum is below £50, but with a cheque card if over, up to £100.   Higher sums will need to be paid in cash, or you can use a cheque with cheque card up to £100 and pay the balance in cash  If you are elsewhere, you can send cash (registered post, please), a building society cheque signed by the building society, or irrevocable bankers' draft.  However, the easiest way to pay, if you have an on-line bank account, is by electronic transfer. Please telephone for the necessary information.  We do not accept credit or debit cards.

When your payment is cleared the instrument will be despatched that day, usually with next day delivery (three days if the weekend intervenes).

Carriage, package and insurance: we ask you to add £5 to the price as a contribution to insured carriage and packing for clarinets, oboes, and flutes, or £15 for large instruments, such as saxophones and bass clarinets, which are hugely more costly to send.

3. HIRE

At present, with the exception of the Lyons C Clarinet,  hiring can only be brought about by personal visit to our premises;  and for this purpose we usually need some proof of identity and proof of your address. Sorry about that, nothing personal, but simply proper business practice.

Either for hire or purchase, if you care to bring the prospective player along we give comprehensive instruction on how to put the instrument together, take it apart, clean it and care for it, and how to blow the first notes. This is a free service much appreciated by buyers, pupils and teachers alike, and amounts in effect to a first lesson.  It avoids damage through lack of know-how, enables the learner to start 'playing' immediately, and saves the teacher's time in the first lesson.

4. Selling an instrument to us

We buy instruments, but from callers only, and it is essential to bring along proof of your identity and of your present address. But please telephone before calling. We pay by cheque, or cash if you prefer.
