We specialise in supplying and maintaining these smaller instruments, intended for children with small hands, usually from 6 to 11 years old. Most people don't want to buy, as children quickly grow out of them - especially 8 and 9-yr olds. So we hire them out at £21.50
per school
term. The hire charge covers the period from the beginning to the end of the term, but if the clarinet is to be kept the following term the holidays come free. The rental covers maintenance whilst the instrument is on hire, including new pads, but not reeds. Three reeds are supplied upon first hire, together with case, mouthpiece and pull-through. New reeds can be supplied by post or bought at your local music shop. (Ask for E-flat reeds, not B-flat) We always have them in stock. IF YOU HAVE A SIX OR SEVEN-YR OLD CHILD it would pay you to buy rather than hire, since it is likely the child would not be ready for a full-size instrument for say a couple of years. Much depends on the width of the fingers, rather than the size of the hand. Some children have slender fingers and might take time for the fingers to become wide enough to close the holes of the larger instrument. We also have a
few ex-hire instruments on sale from £95 to £110. They are
all carefully checked and adjusted in our workshop and are guaranteed
one year against all defects. They come with three selected reeds, a
pull-through and a carry case. The Lyons C clarinets themselves do not
deteriorate noticeably,so there is no worry on that account, although pads
occasionally need replacing.
